With the Interoperability and Patient Access rule, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has introduced new policies to expand patient access to health information and improve information sharing to advance patient-centered care.

The most significant proposal would require Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program, Medicare Advantage plans, and qualified health plans in the health insurance exchanges to provide enrollees with immediate electronic access to medical claims and other health information electronically. To accommodate these requests for information, payers must adopt data-sharing technologies such as application programming interfaces (APIs) and demonstrate efforts to eliminate information blocking practices.

Ryan Howells, MHP, PMP, principal at Leavitt Partners, will discuss the new proposed rules and their implications for payers, particularly the implementation of new technology.

Learning objectives:

  • Detail the interoperability requirements finalized by CMS for payers.
  • Understand the impact of changes for payers in the near-, mid-, and long-term.
  • Learn how the implementation of technology will enable payer compliance.
